We took a scenic drive to visit the ancient city of Amedi in northeast Kurdistan about 10 miles from the Turkish border. The geology was very pretty and “vertical” along most of the route.
There were little villages in the ravines along the way. We don’t quite know what to make of these carvings into the rock.
The mountain chain was like a row of shark’s teeth…
Eventually we came into view of Amedi itself. Amedi was founded by the Assyrians in 3,000 BC or 5,000 years ago. Legend has it that the 3 wise men who visited the Christ child set off from the village of Amedi. Many Jews were brought here at the fall of the northern Kingdom of Israel. Jews, Christians, and Muslims have lived in harmony here for 2,000 years.
Another view of Amedi on the plateau.
This is Amedi taken from a nearby mountain by another traveler…
As we approached we passed many little tourist areas and restaurants in the ravines and along the sides of the mountain.
We drove up to the village itself but stopped along the way to get a family photo with Geri.
Amedi itself feels like it really still hasn’t entered the 21st century.
Another view of the village center area…
Jim was fascinated by this wall… someone in our time had built an interesting facade of rocks over a wall that was thousands of years old… as you can see from where some of the facade have fallen away.
Many buildings were similar to this one where it appears anciently someone had built a structure and then, perhaps, hundreds of years later someone else added to it with different rocks they had found.
Another example of ‘more modern’ construction on top of a more ancient structure.
….and we have no idea what this building might have been used for in its ancient day…
A view from the edge of Amedi into the valley….
….on the edge….
A few final pictures before we head down the plateau.
In this picture notice the house behind us to the right… it is balanced on concrete posts….
One last picture of Jim with the beautiful background…
Here I have zoomed in on those houses on concrete “sticks”…..
Here we stopped for a farewell to Amedi (in the background) picture with Geri 😃🦒
On another adventure- sometime earlier when we visited Lalish we were guests of the Baba Chawish, the spiritual leader of the Yazidi, and he took us to see this very ancient structure that was used as housing for the Yazidi making pilgrimages to Lalish in ancient times.
It is almost medieval in appearance….
Amazing the thousands of stones forming the arched ceiling….
Jim with members of our group inside the ancient guest house…
An old entrance that had been closed or hidden in later years….
They are still not sure what all the areas were used for… we were quite privileged to be allowed to see inside …
The gentleman dressed in white is the Baba Chawish, the spiritual leader of all the Yazidi. It has been a privilege for us to know him.
