We took a scenic drive to visit the ancient city of Amedi in northeast Kurdistan about 10 miles from the Turkish border. The geology was very pretty and “vertical” along most of the route. There were little villages in the ravines along the way. We don’t quite know what to make of these carvings into the rock. The mountain chain was like a row of shark’s teeth… Eventually we came into view of Amedi itself. Amedi was founded by the Assyrians in 3,000 BC or 5,000 years ago. Legend has it that the 3 wise men who visited the Christ child set off from the village of Amedi. Many Jews were brought here at the fall of the northern Kingdom of Israel.
